The Oregon Trail is a classic computer game first released in 1971. Developed by three student teachers at Carleton College, it quickly gained popularity and has since been widely recognized as an important part of American educational technology history.

In The Oregon Trail, players assume the role of a wagon leader guiding a group of settlers westward across the United States during the mid-19th century. The game was designed to teach players about American history and geography while also testing their decision-making abilities and critical thinking skills.

Players must plan their route, gather supplies, hunt for food, and navigate treacherous terrain including rivers and mountains. Along the way, they encounter historical challenges such as disease outbreaks and attacks by Native Americans.
